Why use an original oil filter?

The original oil filter is designed specifically for your engine block and to provide the absolute best filtration for the lifetime of the car or usage period. All oil filters come with a filter medium. These (usually paper) filters have a certain filter rating, measured in microns. This rating is decided by Ford engineers and is based on several factors, including the engine type and operation. Bij benzinemotoren zijn dit bijvoorbeeld variabele kleptiming en hydraulische klepbediening, spanner van de timing en natuurlijk een smerings film tussen de krukas en nokkenas, lagers en lifters.

In Ford V8 diesel engines, the HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump) and its associated pressure are particularly crucial for driving the diesel injectors. The filters are manufactured by Purolator, but the filter media are always to Ford specifications. The bypass valves are fitted elsewhere in the filter. So even the Purolator filters sold in auto parts stores in the US don’t meet the specifications required by Ford.

Why use recommended oil?

Original Ford motorcraft oil, produced by ConocoPhillips, is developed to strict specifications. And there are good reasons for that.

Almost all oils have additional additives to help maintain proper lubrication at high temperatures. As you can imagine, a different composition of additives is required for each type of engine and expected usage pattern. The idea that very hot oil doesn’t lubricate as well has been thoroughly debunked! The oil does thin out, and the oil pressure may drop slightly, but that’s because the slightly thinner oil can be pumped more easily. So in volume, slightly more oil is being pumped and a significant amount of heat is still dissipated.

Why stick to the service intervals?
Independent research by Blackstone labs in the US has shown that the standard service intervals are calculated fairly accurately, and the oil does begin to slowly break down at those points. These tests have also been done with other oil brands, and the same patterns emerged. So no matter what brand you use, stick to the set service intervals. If you drive faster, race or consistently pull heavy loads with your truck, it’s a good idea to change the oil a little sooner.
